Puzzle Update

Puzzle has stabilized with his headtilt. He will continue to has problems with his balance but he seems comfortable enough to return to the big boy enlcosure.

He has to have independent free range time because, for some reason, the boys seem to pick on him. Puzzle ventures under the bed but typically very close to the cage. He prefers the comfort of the enclosure walls for balance and guidance.

Many of us find it difficult to say "no" when asked to donate to a charity seeking a cure for a disease. And how many of us can take the time to find out how that donation would be used? Would our money really alleviate suffering or would our donation dollars actually contribute to suffering?

Many huge health charities, including the American Cancer Society, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the March of Dimes, the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, and the American Lung Association, actually take millions of lives. They waste precious dollars on cruel, irrelevant experiments on dogs, rats, cats, mice, primates, pigs, sheep, and other animals instead of spending them on promising human-based programs.

Life-taker charities have tortured and killed millions of animals in cruel experiments, yet the incidence and death rates of the diseases that they address remain about the same and, in some cases, have even increased.

Humans and animals both feel pain, fear, sadness, joy, love, and other emotions, but physiologically there are vast differences between the species. Data from one species cannot be correctly applied to another. Different species of animals vary enormously in their reactions to toxins and diseases and in their metabolism of drugs. Consequently, reliance on animal "models" to address human diseases has been misleading, unnecessary, and dangerous.

Every dollar that life-taker charities spend on animal research is a dollar that could have been better spent on humane, relevant, effective programs to help people with diseases or disabilities. Animals who get stuck to them suffer for days before they finally die of starvation, dehydration, self-mutilation, and shock. Little Stilton was purchased at the local pet store at five weeks of age. He was returned 2 months later with a severe infestation of mites and head tilt. He was cover in scratches and scabs as well. His owner returned him because he was not getting along with her other rats.

Jess, the small mammal supervisor, contacted me knowing I would give him a safe home. He was isolated and treated for the mites. Stilton will be visiting the vet tomorrow to see about his head tilt.

He is a little timid of being picked up but enjoys his supervised free range time on the bed. He is a happy go lucky little fellow and too cute for words.

Last week I got hit in the leg by Xia at the dog park. As a result, I had some very painful sub-dermal bruising on the side of my calf. I've been hobbling around for about a week now and this morning I noticed the bruise finally came to the surface. The picture doesn't do it justice. It's about the size of a softball and is every color in the rainbow.

The local pet stores stop carrying Benny's favorite bunny food.

I'm not sure what the reason is but its impossible to find a single bag.

This didn't go over very well with Benny.

I mixed his food with the new rabbit pellets but he wasn't impressed.

After a day and a half Benny gave up his hunger strike.

He ate the whole dish then chewed on his litter box.

Sugar was pregnant when I adopted her. But it was a surprise to hear little squeaks coming out of the cage this afternoon. She started to have them at one o'clock and when I got home at seven there was 12 maybe 13 little pinkies. One little fellow didn't make it but I'm proud of my little momma just the same.

Brutus passed away quietly on Tuesday evening. He came to us as an overweight, undersocialize depressed ball of fur and developed into a fun loving, cat chasing ratscal. He loved his kleenex boxes and getting scratched behind the ear.

He has a special place in our hearts and we'll never forget you.

New Hair Color

I found this hair color in the clearance bin at Walmart. I figured for $3.50 a box I couldn't go wrong. It is two shades darker than my natural color, making it black. I really like it especially since it covered my ever multiplying white hairs.

Day 4 was quiet

Day 5 - I was in Presque Isle for the day but when I came home I soon discovered activity.

Logs had magically appeared in the very spot that Mr Corbett snowplowed earlier this week.

Day 6 - I woke to a noise and as I ventured upstairs I soon saw Mr Corbett and his chainsaw.

I tried my very best to capture him in his bright orange chainsaw outfit; if you look closely you can see his orange helmet above Mrs. Prosser's fence.

Day 7 - Miss Kitty is out investigating these occurrences and has yet to report back.

Betula papyrifera (Paper Birch, also known as American White Birch and Canoe Birch) is a species of birch native to northern North America. It is a medium-sized deicidous tree reaching 20 m tall (exceptionally to 35 m) with a trunk up to 80 cm diameter. The bark is white, commonly brightly so, flaking in fine horizontal strips, and often with small black marks and scars. In individuals younger than five years the bark appears brown with white lenticels, making the tree much harder to distinguish from other trees. The leaves are alternate, ovate, 5-12 cm long and 4-9 cm broad, with a doubly serrate margin. The leaf buds are conical and small, they are green colored with brown edges.

The flowers are wind-pollinated catkins 3-8 cm long growing from the tips of twigs, the fruit matures in the fall. The mature fruit is composed of numerous tiny winged seeds packed between the catkin bracts. They drop between September and spring.

Nicknamed "Hubcap", this teddy bear was found wet and cold on the traffic circle in Oromocto near Canadian Tire. He was visibly frightened and suffered minor injuries after being hit by a car. He was rescued on Christmas eve, given a warm bath and lots of bed rest. Although he is very comfortable, he is looking for his family to let them know where he is.

I hope Paul had a great day and I am glad I was around to share it with him. Okay, I was just there for free cake, but I still care.

Shower Scene - Rated PG-13

In my new apartment I have a small little shower stall that was really made for one person perhaps even for somebody smaller than me. But last week Travis and I attempted to "get clean" before heading off to work. I know that very few of you know what Travis looks like (I am working on that) but he is a broad shouldered hillbilly. So it was a very tight squeeze, but we managed to figure it out.

Now it doesn't take a college degree to run the hot/cold water taps, but it does take some level of skill. Perhaps I inherited that from being a plumber's daughter, or maybe I am just not an idiot. Anyways I was placed in charge of the temperature. As we were showering Travis attempted to adjust the cold water. He was standing in the direct line of fire as the scolding hot water came bursting from the shower head. As the tough manly man that he is, Travis yelped and managed to leap out of the way of the flow despite being in a very petite stall. With this quick movement he left me in harms way; he is so heroic. Once he realized what he had done, he grabbed the shower head to turn the nozzle away from me. In all the panic he ripped the shower head off the pipe causing the gentle rain of hot water to turn into a horrible blast. I yelped and turned off the water completely.

We both stood in shock for a brief moment as Travis held the shower head in his hand. We couldn't resist bursting out in laughter. We looked like two freshly cooked lobsters. We managed to figure out how to put the shower back together. But it was a memorable afternoon.

Trading Sparkle for Bling

I decided to let go of my ring that Derick gave me; Sparkle Sparkle. I tossed it out while unpacking at my new place in Perth. Chris's girlfriend was nice enough to find it, pick it up, and ask me if it was mine. I starred at it for a moment and politely replied no. I felt as though it represented a failure in my life and it was time for closure. I was pleased at her interest in aquiring a ring that was so dear to me at one time. Now it has a new home with somebody that will be able to wear it.

I have traded the ring for some new bling. I received a silver necklace with a "diamond-encrusted" letter T. It is a statement that I am now taken by Travis. He is a pretty cool guy that I enjoy spending time with. I have no idea where it is going, but we are having a great time getting to know each other.

I am really glad to have traded sparkle for bling ... so far... ;)

Superhero Day

Today is superhero day at work. We get to dress up like our favorite hero in order to boost moral around the pod. Although I refuse to wear a spandex outfit in public I did choose a person who is a hero of mine.

Okay, so I really don't know what Michelle wears on a regular basis. I stuck with sneakers, jeans and my OHS sweatshirt. It's comfy and straight to the point. I love my superhero sister. She is one of the biggest inspirations in my life.

Won Ton Soup

After talking him into eating it, I explain that it was young Chinese boy testicles. I thought I should get Nik to talk to him about the benefits of eating them, but Trav didn't go for it.

The Cat Came Back...

Crohn's Disease

Recently some people have become offended by my MSN picture depicting a young man suffering from crohn's. They don't seem to understand how he represents this terrible disease or what crohn's really is. Click this link for wikipedia or read the following information.

Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, describes two similar yet distinct conditions called Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. These diseases affect the digestive system and cause the intestinal tissue to become inflamed, form sores and bleed easily. Symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, fatigue and diarrhea.

Crohn's disease can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus. Patches of inflammation occur, with healthy tissue between the diseased areas. The inflammation can extend through every layer of affected bowel tissue. Crohn's disease can not be cured by drugs or surgery, although either or both can help relieve symptoms.
Ulcerative colitis affects only the inner layer of the colon, or large bowel. It always starts in the rectum and may extend as a continuous inflammation from there into the rest of the colon. Usually ulcerative colitis can be controlled with medication. The disease can be completely eliminated by surgically removing the colon, but afterward, waste material may have to be stored and expelled through an external appliance.

There is no known cause or cure for IBD. In Canada, an estimated 170,000 Canadian men and women suffer from IBD. People are most frequently diagnosed between the ages of 15-25, or 45-55. IBD is particularly difficult for children and young adults since it often affects a person's self-concept, body image and lifestyle at a time when "being like everyone else" is so important. IBD is unpredictable.

Most people experience periods of remission and flare-ups of the disease, often requiring long-term medication, hospitalization or surgery. Although IBD is found throughout the world, it seems to be more common in North America and northern Europe. Canada is believed to have one of the highest incidence rates of IBD in the world.

A Snowstorm Worth Writing About!

Derick has been waiting all winter for this one. The great International Harvester tractor with plow, blower, mower deck and tiller attachments was purchased from Bill in upper New York State. Sterling and Derick travelled during a terrible rainstorm to pick it up and here it sat for several months waiting for this moment.

Derick was eye wide with anticipation as every snowflake danced in the air this afternoon. After supper the timing was right and he suited up. Wash Your Hands

Don't be scared to ask your healthcare providers to wash their hands before they handle you or equipment around you. They are working for you to make you healthier. Most doctors, nurses and other staff are overworked and exhausted; they may not think to wash after each patient. Most hospitals are lacking in their inforcement of disinfection and sanitation procedures. I have been a witness to what happens when you get an infection from a stay in the hospital.

We selected another war movie to keep Miss Kitty entertained this evening. Unfortunately she gave the Flags of Our Fathers two furry paws down. It was an emotional film of the lives of three war veterans, and too sappy for her taste. It was lacking in the horrific fight scenes that Miss Kitty so adores.

So instead of sitting through the entire thing she was up to her usual tricks and getting into trouble.

Trip to Erin's

Day One

In an attempt to make peace between Captain and Erin we are planning to spend lots of time at her apartment. Today Erin and I quietly cross-stitched as Captain stressed out and laid on his blanket. Peaches didn't take to her new visitor, but maybe that will change in time. Some milkbones will calm Captain down and perhaps make peace. Captain is already to go tomorrow.

Thirst For Blood

This innocent looking killer has made every attempt to cure her cabin fever this winter. She spends hours chasing the ball around her scratch pad, planning attacks on toy mice and annoying the heck out of me. But her thirst for blood is ceaseless as she longs to chase down anything that crosses her path or wanders into the yard.

So Miss Kitty has turned her attention to the television. Not any program will do, she loves historical war movies with planes and gun fights. She is a morbid little feline. She may wander off for a snack during the emotional sappy parts, but during fighting scenes she is sitting front row center staring at the tv and speakers. These are her two most recent movies that she adores.

I will have to go and rent more to keep her devilish mind entertained.

I telephoned the vet today to make an appointment for Captain. His ear has been bothering him for a few days and I have tried my best to hope it would just go away. Unforunately, I knew it was coming down to a trip to the Grand Falls Vet Clinic. I will say that they are lovely, hardworking people that are dedicated to their jobs. The conversation went as normal until she asked me for my dog's name. Apparently there aren't many Captains around because as soon as I mentioned that I was put on hold. She returned and politely explained to me that they wouldn't need him to come in. They would provide me with all the necessary medication and instruction that I requested. I couldn't help but laugh at her professionalism, she did put it so much more politely than the last vet.

Ah Captain, another vet bites the dust.
